Which towbar electrical kit is right for you?

You are always best with a vehicle specific wiring kit as this will sync up perfectly with your vehicle’s electrical system. You may need to purchase a new vehicle specific wiring kit if you are transferring your towbar from your old vehicle to your new one - as different cars have different electrical systems and added safety features. Alternatively, a universal towing kit would be suitable for towing a small trailer as it provides the basic legal electrical requirements for towing.

Wiring kits and adapters

We have a number of towbar wiring kits available for 7 pin and 13 pin trailer plugs, as well as universal electric kits, adapters, extension kits and vehicle specific options.

Depending on your towbar electrics and your trailer or caravan electrical plug, you may need to purchase an adapter. If one has a 7 pin plug and the other has a 13 pin plug, you will need an adapter to sync up the electrical systems. Additionally, some electrical kits have a 13 pin socket, but only 7 pins are wired up for the legally required light functions. An extension kit connects the remaining 6 pins to give you additional functionality such as powering the fridge or reverse lights.

Why do I need a towbar electrics kit?

Before you attach your trailer or caravan and embark on the great outdoors all over Europe, you need to make sure everyone can see you on the road. Once you have attached a trailer, caravan or bike rack to your towbar the rear road lights will be hidden. So, you need to send the correct signals and keep your passengers safe by wiring up your towbar electrics correctly.

If you have a towbar mounted bike rack with a lighting board, you also need to invest in an electrical kit. When your bikes are mounted on your rack, they will cover your vehicle’s rear lights. To increase your visibility at night and make your indicators easy to see, use a towbar electrics kit to sync your vehicle electrics with the bike rack lighting board.
